Big Pots, Big Bluffs – 2008 Poker Tournaments
By Claudia Beckford
The exciting card game of poker has its roots in the distant Persian reign and it is thought the game descended from a popular 16th century gambling Italian card game known as "Primero" as well as the French brelan.
Poker’s notoriety quickly spread in Europe and America as a common entertainment which eventually developed into organized events such as World Series tournaments that started in the early 1970’s.
Among some of the most popular forms of poker there are: seven-card stud, seven card high-low stud, Omaha Hold 'em or Texas Hold 'em. Additionally, other mixes of the game combine:; Hold'em, Omaha, Razz, Stud and Stud Eight or Better and Dealer's Choice.
Despite the fact the game of poker has become a year-round business, there are two top events held yearly: the World Poker Tour and the World Series of Poker. This last one takes place in Las Vegas and it has a length of almost a month featuring the top professional players with a $10,000 buy-in fee. Only four players have won the event several times: Johnny Moss (1970, 1971 and 1974), Doyle Brunson (1976 and 1977), Stu Ungar (1980, 1981 and 1997) and Johnny Chan (1987 and 1988.)
The following are some of the WSOP winners of All-Time; ranking at number 5…Allen Cunningham with $6,525,279 in winnings, at number 4 Paul Wasicka with a total of $6,189,966, in the third position there is Joseph Hachem $7,927,291, Jerry Yang keeps the second place with $8,250,000 and the number one ranking is for Jamie Gold with over $12,000,000 in life time winnings.
Most recently another exciting event took place at the Atlantis Casino, Paradise Island, Nassau in The Bahamas “the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure” which is the largest televised poker tournament besides the World Series. Bertrand Grospellier, the 26-year-old Frenchman established a new first prize record of $2 million after challenging and beating over 1,100 players.
“The entire trip has been one thrilling experience after another and now I'm returning home as the 2008 PCA Champion”. It was a very tough field with a lot of online American qualifiers who played really well. Grospellier told All In magazine.
Just to mention some other poker events for the current year there are; the World Poker Open, the Poker Classic, the World Poker Challenge at the Grand Sierra Resort, WPT World Championship in mid April, the Bellagio Cup, Legends of Poker and the World Poker Finals.
