Upcoming 2007 MLS Season

By Cindy Ferguson

Many are looking forward to the next Major League Soccer, MLS, season that is scheduled to start on April 7th, 2007 and the first game programmed on the calendar is D.C. United against Colorado Rapids in Colorado at 3:30pm Eastern Standard time.

Each of the teams within the league has made the necessary changes and arrangements to get off to a good start and there are a lot of things to look for in this year’s season. Exciting changes that most await include the contracting of foreign star players, which is the case of Galaxy who contracted David Beckham as the team’s new quarterback.

As for the New York Red Bulls they will finally have their own grounds to play on after years and years of waiting. The new arena located on Cape May Street is scheduled to open in July of 2008. For many a two-year more to wait in order to have their own stadium is nothing compared to the long six years of fighting to finally have a place to call home and all feel that once they play at home it will help the team record wise in the league.

Maybe one of the most significant procedures taken to make teams more competitive and make the sport more appealing is the TV broadcasting that will take place this season along with the improved Latino community receptiveness. The million dollars spent on this will definitely bring benefits to the MLS. There is even a plan to implement a Thursday night soccer night.

Other good measurements in use are in regards to the coaches. This season eleven out of thirteen coaches have either played for the MLS or have coached another club, which would make you expect that all are professional and well familiar with the sport, a tactic to help build each teams confidence.

The preseason games have been played in a playoff format to qualify eight of thirteen teams. This also helps coaches and teammates prepare and identify many playing forms and give them time to fully prepare for the regular season.
