The CONCACAF Gold Cup is being held in six different cities of the United States from the 6th until the 24th of June. The tournament will establish the champion of the area that includes North America, Central America and the Caribbean. The champion will receive an automatic berth in the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup.
Costa Rica made it to the quarterfinals of this year’s CONCACAF Gold Cup as the second team for Group A after winning 1-0 against Guadeloupe on Monday. The Costa Ricans’ win was a must in order to secure their spot but now the Guadeloupe group, which was at the top spot will have to wait for the results of the other groups for a shot at qualifying as one of the best two third placed teams.
Canada also locked its place into the quarterfinals after their 2-0 win over Haiti and gaining the group’s first position six points. Dwayne DeRosario scored both goals in the match sending Haiti back home.
Group B will finish up on Tuesday just outside of Boston when the U.S. matches up against El Salvador and Trinidad & Tobago will play Guatemala. El Salvador and Guatemala have three points each and Trinidad is at the bottom of the standings without a point from two matches.
In Group C Mexico won 2-1 against Cuba and will have to face Honduras which lost 1-3 against Panama. If Mexico reaches the quarterfinals they will play a team that needs points to stay standing. Mexico was favorite to win the Gold Cup but ran into some difficulties against Cuba and will have to show a better effort on Sunday if they want to go further in the competition.
