MLS Continues Search of International Talent
By Claudia Beckford
The Major League Soccer or MLS is the professional soccer league in the United States. It was recently founded in 1994; it is made of 13 teams (including a Canadian one) and it is split in two conferences; the Western and the Eastern conference.
Despite the short time of involvement in international soccer; probably less than 14 years the MLS has grown enormously since its early stages. There is no doubt, soccer as a preferred sports as grown a great deal in the United States and it keeps unveiling new prospects; season after season.
Last year, the news which turned the world of soccer upside down was the inclusion of David Beckham a former Manchester and Real Madrid player as the new man in the Los Angeles Galaxy list of players, basically an unthinkable multi-million dollar contract which gave many spectators the hopes to see a new era in the development of the North American soccer.
Currently, there is a new open in the MLS and rumour has it is the Inter Milan midfielder Luis Figo who could be moving to join a MLS team just as his ex-team mate Beckham did just not long ago.
The 35-year-old Portuguese who is currently recovering from a very serious injury as he broke his leg last November, did not want to refer to the issue especially because his contract with the Italian team expires until this summer.
'I don't like talking about suppositions. I'm not considering the possibility at the moment because I have other things on my mind,' Figo told a news conference in Dubai where Serie A leaders Inter are holding a mid-season training camp.
On the other hand, Figo's agent Miguel Macedo has been clear in stating that Figo is presently happy at the Inter but if his contract is not lengthen he will then think about negotiating with an American team.
Many believe it is a shame that such calibre players consider the possibility of playing the United States almost one or two season before retiring as this could in the near future become a problem. Also, the experts have stated it will be wise for the North American teams to search for new talent in both the Central and South American countries as this is a real source for future talents.
