Los Angeles Galaxy Won Over San Jose Earthquake
By Audrey Nolan
On Thursday night Los Angeles Galaxy won over the San Jose Earthquake. The team finally saw that the combination between Landon Donovan and David Beckham worked and led to a victory they desperately needed.
This was the first time David Beckham finally scored in the Major League Soccer since he first arrived to the American league last year. He scored off an assist from Landon Donovan, the team's biggest American star, and later on returned the favor to help the Galaxy win their home opener, 2-0 over the expansion San Jose Earthquakes.
Beckham took advantage of a pass from Donovan right into the ninth minute and kicked the ball to the end of the net. "It's great to score a goal, usually I'm on the other end assisting," Beckham said. "I'm happy but I'm more happy that the team performed well." Afterwards; Donovan scored at the end of the first half actually from the same spot that David did.
Donovan stated they both pretty much saw the game in the same way. That he knows when he wants the ball and in which way he wants it and the same way works with David. If he puts it on a good place he may have a chance to score. San Jose tried to score in the third minute but it was called offside.
On their opening game of the season the Los Angeles Galaxy were defeated by Colorado 4-0; therefore, this game had to bring out the best of all the players besides trying to win the game as none of them wanted to feel the embarrassed they did a week ago.
Former Galaxy Coach Frank Yallop who missed the playoffs last season with Los Angeles lost against his ex-team. By the end of last year, Frank Yallop quit the Galaxy team and returned to San Jose to coach the Earthquakes. In previous years Yallop led the Earthquakes to two titles in 2001 and 2003.
On the other hand, Beckham has kept the paparazzi quite busy before and after his seventh MLS appearance and it is likely this will continue after his goals which without a doubt make the crowd go crazy.
"The energy level was totally different tonight than it was last week," Beckham said. "Tonight we were more relaxed going into the game. Last week we were a bit tense. Maybe nerves set in as well in the first game."
Perhaps the 2008 MLS season will bring the joys many expected to see last year for which players such Beckham were short of.
