MLS - Donovan One More Time
By Julie Smith
The captain of the Galaxy team earned his 5th award in seven MLS seasons. With a remarkable goal and two assistances on Saturday’s game, Donovan was named this past Monday the Major League Soccer Player of the Week by the journalists of the Professional Soccer Reporters Association.
The goal against Chivas USA was the first scored by Donovan in 2007 season and is a good sign of his good shape. The 3-1 triumph is the Galaxy’s first of the campaign and gives the team a little breath after a loss against Dallas and a tie in Houston moving it out of the Western Conference basement.
Donovan also helped set up Galaxy’s two other goals, the first assist of the evening was just nine minutes after his goal, when he had a perfect pass between to defenders to his Canadian teammate Kevin Harmse, and the other assistance was the one that made the game unreachable in the 78th minute when he found Cobi Jones in front of the net.
Other winners since the season started have been Jeff Cunningham for the week one, followed by Eddie Johnson from the Wizards in week two and Maykel Galindo in week three, but none of them has received the award as many times as Donovan.
The night at the Home Depot Center in Los Angeles was full of color for the Galaxy’s fans. All the credit is to the good game of the captain Landon Donovan, now the Galaxy is tied for third place in the conference standings and the expectations for next game versus the New England Revolution on May 12th are greater.
