CONCACAF Gold Cup: USA to defend the Championship

The first round of the ninth edition of the CONCACAF kicks off Wednesday at the Orange Bowl in Miami with USA (Group B) and Mexico (Group C) as favorites. The first match for the defending champion, United States, will be in Los Angeles against Guatemala.
The tournament, North American’s version of the European Championship, has been held eight times previously, normally every two years. Mexico has won four trophies while the United States has three titles to its name.
Everybody expects the U.S. and Mexico to reach the final but there's always a chance for somebody else. Teams like Costa Rica, Canada and Honduras are talented squads. At least this year, nobody has to worry about somebody from outside the confederation winning the title. For the first time since 1993, no teams from outside the region have been invited.
The top two teams from each group, along with the best two third-placed teams will progress to the quarterfinal stage. The USA team will play in a relatively unchallenging group; which means high expectations remaining over the squad.
The National Soccer team will certainly be the team to watch. Therefore, U.S. coach Bob Bradley has named an extremely strong squad for the tournament, which include Landon Donovan as a star player to secure them place as one of the top teams in the region. The U.S. will not lightly give up their title at home.
