Gold Cup Final: United States Beats Mexico To Retained the Title

By Julie Smith

The United States retained the CONCACAF Gold Cup title, in a very disputed final against Mexico at Soldier Field in Chicago last Sunday. Since 2000, the team has won nine times and lost only twice with one draw for the most titles by any country since the championship of North and Central America and the Caribbean was established in 1991.

The US squad was not a apparent favorite for the final, after a nearly failed to qualify having a controversial 2-1 win over Canada in the semifinals. The game started with Mexico as a leader winning the ball’s possession and a positive score of 1-0 after the fist half. But, the first goal was all it was necessary for the Americans to get motivated and from the 61' on it was all U.S. game.

Landon Donovan, as always, was the star player of the final; scoring the first goal for US, a gorgeous goal, actually the 34th of his career. The US squad in general was a worthy winner of the tournament as they always managed to score when it was needed. The victory extended the American’s supremacy in the area and gives them the financial boost of a place at the 2009 Confederations Cup in South Africa.

After having a week full of intensity and passionate soccer with surprising teams’ performance as that of Guadalupe, the championship viewers and fans were very satisfied and definitely believe this event has increased everyone’s interest for future tournaments.
