Juan Martín del Potro – Growing Strong
By Stephen Lars
At the very young age of 19 years Juan Martin Del Potro continues to show a display of his best tennis skills during these two fantastic weeks during which he managed to win two ATP titles. One of these two being the Kitzbühel tournament, which he won in just 59 minutes to the Austrian Jürgen Melzer for 6-2 and 6-1; with this victory the Argentinean, is now ranking among the 30 world top players in the ATP circuit.
Del Potro’s successive victory was in Stuttgart just after his countryman David Nalbandian’s triumph in Buenos Aires. Del Potro just clearly showed that he is good material for the Davis Cup team and the team’s captain Alberto Mancini will very likely call him for the semifinals next September against Russia at the Park Rock
During the tournament in Stuttgart Del Potro’s game was very strong even against rivals as strong as Richard Gasquet. Juan had a great level of confidence and he did not drop one set during the entire week.
During the match where he played Melzer Del Potro commanded the game from the beginning with solid serves; besides winning more than 85% of the points that he played with the first serve, and 80% with the second. At the same time the Austrian did not seem concentrated and was lacking strength. Del Potro’s game continued to be very physical aside from his metal capability to come out successful of a tight situation.
It was very pleasing to see the young Argentinean recovered from his previous back problems, which troubled him the first part of the season.
"The best is to grasp all very fast, and he learns easily. What is important is that the fact this is giving an identity to his play, he takes the initiative and wins a lot with the serve. He can improve in all, and we seek that run more the right, and other details, as to volley a little more and that be encouraged to play for the sides. This tour was important, because besides the titles on the hard courts he was able to get to a semifinal on lawn (in ´s-Hertogenbosch), and that served to understand that he can play anywhere", explained Davin.
The fact of winning two consecutive titles is not an easy task besides Del Potro the other tennis player that has equally achieved to win consecutive titles is Rafael Nadal by winning in Monte Carlo, Barcelona as well as Roland Garros and Queens.
Now in Kitzbühel the name of Del Potro has been added to a list of great tennis players who have also managed to win such as: Guillermo Coria, Gastón Gaudio, Augustine Calleri and Juan Monaco, and Guillermo Vilas and Horacio de la Peña. He certainly is a young player with a bright future ahead as he continues to grow stronger as a next contender for the current top 10 players.
Del Potro’s next stop will be in Los Angeles in approximately two weeks. Unfortunately he will not be able to participate in the Beijing Olympics due to his ranking being very low at the time; but we will soon see more of the Argentinean in the upcoming ATP games left for the season.
