BMW Open Results 2006
By Julie Smith
One of the finalists in the 2003 BMW Open Jarkko Nieminen from Finland advanced to the quarterfinals of the same tournament this year when he defeated his German opponent Alexander Waske 7-6 (7-2), 6-3 on Wednesday. Nieminen will be playing the next BMW Open match against Robin Vik of the Czech Republic to define who will be part of the semifinals. This one is the sixth quarterfinal of the season for the left-handed Nieminen, who has improved 21- 9 in the present season.
Robin Vik defeated Juan Monaco of Argentina 7-6 (7-3), 4-6, 6-4. If Vik reaches this semifinal, it would be his first one of the year.
Also Kristof Vliegen (Belgium) advanced when he beat Robin Soderling (Sweden) 5-7, 6-2, 6-4. Vliegen has ascended more than 100 spaces in the ATP rankings in less than a year. This year’s 18 wins surpass the total triumphs he took home in the past two seasons combined (17).
The next match for Vliegen will be with Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany, who beat Jan Hernych of the Czech Republic 3-6, 6-0, 7-5.
There are just a couple seeds left on the tournament. Nieminen is the #3 seed and is one of only two seeded players left in the championship. The other one is #5 seed Olivier Rochus who didn’t play on Wednesday but will take on Spaniard Ruber Ramirez Hidalgo in his second-round match on Thursday.
Five of the seven seeds were eliminated on Tuesday.
