By Julie Smith

After being away for three months due to an injury the great tennis player Venus Williams returned to the courts in a very successful way last Wednesday after beating sixth seed Ana Ivanovic 6-3 and 6-4 in the first round of the Luxemburg Championship.

This one was Williams’ first match since Wimbledon. And it was here that she got the victory against Ivanovic in 71 minutes even though she is coming back from an injury that cost her three months out of the matches. Williams suffered a wrist injury so she started slow and dropped her serve in the opening game.

Venus Williams’ ranking has fallen to 54th but during this match she broke back for 2-2 and then broke again in the eighth game before serving out for the first set. Her contender recovered an early break at the start of the second set but Williams broke twice more to lead 4-1.

Venus Williams and her sister Serena are well known all around the globe for their outstanding tennis abilities. Venus who was born on June 17, 1980 is a former World No. 1 tennis champion.

Venus who now is 26 years old became professional on October, 1994 although she did not play regularly on the tour until 1997. That year, while playing the U.S. Open for the first time, Venus reached the final where she lost 6-0, 6-4 to Martina Hingis. After that, Venus kept winning many important championships; including two gold medals at the Sydney Summer Olympics in 2000, the 1999 French Open doubles. In this tournament she had Serena as her partner and five other doubles and two mixed doubles grand slams.

In the year 2000, Venus took the victory at the Wimbledon championship and the U.S. Open in singles and successfully defended both grand slam titles in 2001. In 2002 and 2003, Venus Williams reached five major finals but lost all of them to her sister Serena.

Venus and Serena won the 1998 French Open doubles title. This way they became the first pair of sisters to win a doubles title in the 20th century.
