What Does the Future Hold for the ATP Rankings in 2008?

By Claudia Beckford

And history continues to write itself as this year’s results continue to interest us even more; up to this point we have seemed some ATP International Series Gold tournaments, one ATP Master Series; the Indian Wells Masters better known as the Pacific Life Open which is played on hard courts in California and the very first jewel of the sport the Australian Grand Slam.

The results from all these tournaments have been very different to what we all were expecting based on last year’s individual progress; right now the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) which was created 36 years ago has released the current top 10 ranking positions and points as follows: with 6550 points in first place is Roger Federer; who has not yet been able to find his game and has not win any titles so far in 2008, just 845 point behind him is Rafael Nadal whose game has improved from what we saw by the end of last year; but there is something still missing which it is a major concern due to his most imminent rival set on hot wheels getting closer and closer. The Serb Novak Djokovic is in third place with 5280 point only 425 behind the Spaniard.

Djokovic who recently won the Australian Grand Slam surprised us this past weekend by taking home his first Pacific Life Open title winning in three set to the American Mardy Fish overcoming players such as Nalbandian and Federer himself to book a spot in the finals.

On the other hand, we have in fourth place the Russian Davydenko who has 2710 points; the gap between the third and fourth position keeps enlarging as there are more than 2500 points required to equal the Serb. Another tight position is the fifth place who is the second best Spaniard player David Ferrer who has 2640 point only 70 points away from a higher position. Ferrer’s game continues steady besides the improvements we have been able to witness but there is a very important fact and that is Ferrer has proven he can play on any surface; actually we have seemed his best on the American hard courts; but let’s not sideline his good game on clay and carpet. There is no doubt he will bring many more surprises throughout the year.

Then we have the American Andy Roddick, who no more than a month ago departed ways with his coach and shockingly won the 2008 Dubai Tournament, he is in sixth place with 2160 points. Only 60 points behind we find the Argentinean best player David Nalbandian. He has put up a good game lately, but his performance decreased a bit from what we viewed in Madrid and Paris last year.

Lastly, we have the French Richard Gasquest in eight place with 1885 points, the American James Blake in ninth place with 1800 points; Blake has shown more fierce fullness as well as more focus on his game which is very interest to see as he has pulled out victories we thought he could not managed so there is to expect he could be moving to better positions on the ranking board. And in tenth position with 1685 point we find the Czech Tomas Berdych at a young age of just 23 years and a powerful game to offer.

Nevertheless, there are more Masters Series games approaching as well as the French Grand Slam which will provide to any of the players described above with plenty of points to keep moving the pieces of the puzzle. One thing is sure the top three in the ATP rankings could see a new master bouncing his way to the top before we can even notice it.
