The classic cycling event Giro d’Italia has a very fine history behind it just like the Tour de France The Giro started to announce a newspaper then the organizers made the leaders jersey the same color as the paper which was pink that represented La Gazzetta dello Sport.
The first Giro was in 1909 and was 2448 kilometres long (the shortest), split into 8 stages and was won by the Italian rider Luigi Ganna, 127 riders started in Milan, but by the finish line there were only 49 cyclists left. This was not the worst edition, in 1914 only 8 out of the 81 starters managed to handle the full distance.
The Giro d'Italia, also just known as the Giro, is a long distance road bicycle race for professional cyclists held over three weeks in May or early June in and around Italy.
The race was inspired by its predecessor the Tour de France. Along with the Tour de France and the World Cycling Championship, the Giro d'Italia makes up the Triple Crown of Cycling. Along with the Tour de France and the Vuelta a España it is one of the three Grand Tours.
