The Sony Open takes place at the Waialae Country Club in Honolulu, Hawaii and it is a professional golf tournament on the PGA Tour, and it is also part of the tour's FedEx Cup Series.
It has been contested since 1971 and it is usually held in January or February.
In 2007, 72 professionals and one amateur were able to make the 36-hole cut including 16-year-old Tadd Fujikawa who is the second youngest player ever to make a 36-hole cut in an official PGA Tour event. Seventy-one participants plus young Mr. Fujikawa; officially completed the full 72 holes of competition which had a total purse of $5,210,296.
The event has attracted the attention of many for giving female golfer Michelle Wie numerous Sponsor Invitations (PGA Tour Exemption #12) to play in the event. But, Ms. Wie has not made the cut in any of her four appearances: 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007.
