Calder Memorial Trophy

NHL Odds ►►

The Calder Memorial Trophy is rooted in a tradition that begun in the 1936-37 season by the then NHL President Frank Calder. Each year, until his death in 1943, Calder purchased a trophy to be given permanently to the most outstanding rookie of the year.

The NHL continued the tradition, formally naming the award the Calder Memorial Trophy in honor of Frank Calder. The NHL has assigned certain preconditions:

  • A player cannot have played in 25 or more games in any single preceding season.

  • A player cannot have played in 6 or more games in the previous two seasons in a professional game.

  • A player must be 26 years old or younger by the September 15th of the season for which he is eligible.

This year’s finalists for the Calder Memorial Trophy are Steve Mason of the Columbus Blue Jackets, Bobby Ryan of the Anaheim Ducks, and Kirk Versteeg of the Chicago Blackhawks. (For more information on the finalists, please see our NHL articles.)
