The Boston Bruins were founded as a result of the NHL expansion in the city of Boston. The team is a member of the Northeast division of the NHL's Eastern Conference.
The Bruins were first established in 1924 and were a very successful ice hockey group over the following decades. The Bruins have won a large number of division championships in addition to two conference tournaments and five Stanley Cup victories. Their last Stanley Cup was in 1971-72.
Although the Bruins experienced difficulties during the 1980s, 90s, and early years of the 2000s, the team has had something of a comeback more recently. In the 2007-08 season, the Bruins managed 41 wins, 89 losses, and placed third overall in regular season rankings. The team did, however, lose in the playoff quarterfinals to the Montreal Canadiens.
In the 2008-09 season, the Bruins finished with the best record in both the Northeast Division and in the Eastern conference, boasting a regular season record of 53 wins, 19 losses, and 10 overtime losses. It was the team’s fifth qualification for the playoffs in the last 9 years. The Bruins appeared to be a fierce contender for the Stanley Cup, first defeating their old opponents, the Canadiens, in the first round with a four game sweep. The team was less fortunate in the second round; the Bruins were defeated by the Carolina Hurricanes after a 3-2 overtime loss in Game 7.
The Bruins play at the TD Banknorth Garden and are headed by general manager Peter Chiarelli and head coach Claude Julien.
