Originally founded in the early 1970s, the team was known as the Atlanta Flames. The Flames were brought into the NHL during the league’s bitter rivalry with the upstart World Hockey Organization. The first few seasons were relatively successful for the Flames; the team made six of its eight playoff games in Atlanta – although it did not claim any playoff victories.
Despite the team’s success, financial difficulties led to its sale to a group in Calgary in 1980. Since then, the team has been known as the Calgary Flames. The new locale was a good one for the Flames, and the 1980s found the team growing in both success and popularity. In the 1987-88 season, Calgary recorded its first 100-point record, winning the President’s Trophy for setting the league’s best record. Then, in 1989, along with both a division and conference championship, the Flames claimed the Stanley Cup for the first time.
The Flames have entered into the playoffs in each of the three previous seasons. They also entered the 2008-09 postseason in the fifth seed, but were defeated by the Chicago Blackhawks 4-2 in the first round.
The Flames’ head coach is Mike Keenan, who signed on with Calgary in 2007. Keenan led the team to a 42-30-10 season in 2007-08.
Some of the team’s most notable players include Jarome Iginla, Michael Cammalleri, Craig Conroy, and Miikka Kiprusoff.
