The Montreal Canadiens are members of the NHL’s Northeast Division of the Eastern Conference. The team was first established in 1909 as a member of the National Hockey Association. Then in 1917, along with four other teams from the NHA, the Canadiens formed the National Hockey League.

The Montreal team became a powerhouse for hockey, achieving multiple division and conference championships over the franchise’s many decades, not to mention an astonishing 24 Stanley Cups.

Despite the team’s outrageous success during its long history, the last decade of the twentieth century proved difficult for the Canadiens. They struggled to finish in top positions in their division and often failed to qualify for the playoffs.

The team experienced a  brief resurgence in the 2007-08 season, finishing first in the Northeast Division and moving into the Conference Semifinals. However, the Canadiens then lost to the Flyers, 1-4.

In the 2008-09 season, the Canadiens finished second in their division, with 93 points, 41 wins, and 30 losses. They were able to clinch the eighth seed for the playoffs in the Eastern Conference – a celebration of sorts for the franchise’s 100th anniversary. However, the Canadiens were defeated by the top-seeded Boston Bruins in the first round..

The Canadiens are coached by their former superstar, Bob Gainey, who is also the team’s general manager and executive vice president. The team plays at the Bell Centre.
