The team was originally created in mid 1910’s and were known as the Toronto; it is one of the former six teams that grouped to form the National Hockey League (NHL).
During the late 1910’s and 1920’s the team changed its name twice until 1927 when they renamed the team Toronto Maple Leafs.
The Maple Leafs have known several decades of real success as they have won plenty of Stanley Cup trophies during their active history being their last win a division championship in the 1999-00 season.
Some of Toronto’s Maple Leafs most accomplished players are: Dave Keon, Syl Apps, Ron Francis, Larry Murphy, Borje Salming, Harry Watson, Tim Horton and Fernie Flaman just to mention a few. |
The team has its strongest rivalry with the Montreal Canadiens; basically the most followed clashes between these two teams to the point that their competition has been named as the “Forever Rivals”. Another well known rivalry is with the Ottawa Senators; this one has been particularly named the Battle of Ontario.
Paul Maurice is the current head coach as of the 2006-07 season. During the 2007-08 campaign the team managed 36 wins and 34 loses a fifth place in the Northeast division.
