Phoenix Coyotes

  • The Phoenix Coyotes are a professional Ice hockey team based in Glendale
  • Originally, the team began playing as the Winnipeg Jets which is one of the founding franchises in the WHA
  • The team won three Avco World Trophies, the league's championship trophy, and made it the finals five out of the WHA's seven seasons
  • In 2002 the Coyotes built Glendale Arena and moved there in 2003.
  • In 2005 the Coyotes introduced Gretzky as its new head coach, replacing Rick Bowness
  • For the 2006-2007 the Coyotes finished the season 31-46-5, its worst record since relocating to Phoenix
  • The Jets/Coyotes are the only former WHA team to have not appeared in the Stanley Cup Finals

Important facts

  • In 1996 the team was sold to Phoenix businessmen Steven Gluckstern and Richard Burke then moved to Arizona and became the Phoenix Coyotes
  • After arriving in Phoenix, the team posted six consecutive .500 or better seasons, making the playoffs in every year but one.
