Important Facts

  • The Breeders' Cup was founded in 1982 by John R. Gaines as a year-end championship for North American thoroughbred racing.
  • NBC had broadcast the Breeders’ Cup from 1984 to 2005. In 2006 ESPN took over with a contract of 8 years.
  • This year’s event (2008) will include three more races: Turf Sprint, Juvenile Filly Turf and Dirt Marathon.
  • Jerry D. Bailey is the all-time leader jockey with 15 wins and the leading money winning owner is Allen E. Paulson with $8,730,000.
  • Monmouth Park was the track held in 2007. For 2008 and 2009 the Santa Anita Park will be the track for the Cup.
