Donnie and Lonnie Meche
The twins Donnie and Lonnie Meche were born in 1974 in Rayne, Louisiana. A third brother, Cody, is currently riding as an apprentice in Oaklawn. The Meche twins riding debut was on the same day at the same track, but not in the same race. Lonnie Meche rode a race early on the card.
It is remembered that Lonnie Meche came to Oaklawn during the 1997 Racing Festival of the South and rode the sensational Blushing K.D. to triumph in the Fantasy Stakes and then went to Churchill Downs with the same filly and won the Kentucky Oaks.
Eventhough, D. Meche is one of the best riders in the country; his behavior has clashed with racing officials making him to even receive a one-year suspension.
Donnie Meche, 25, rode his first winner at Evangeline Downs in May 1993, and was leading apprentice rider at Louisiana Downs in 1994. Steve Asmussen is among Meche's main clients he has been riding regularly since the 1998 Hawthorne Race Course meeting.
During the 1999 Lone Star Park, D. Meche and Asmussen, combined for five stakes’ victories. Meche finished second in the Lone Star Park standings after a tight battle with Corey Lanerie, winning 90 races. Meche finished 1999 with 217 victories in 1,160 starts and earnings of $4,447,127.
