Important Facts:
- Lacrosse was considered the most commonly played team sport of its time in North America
- It was so popular in fact that many sports historians considered it the original national hobby.
- New York University and Manhattan College played the first U. S. intercollegiate game on November 22, 1877
- The original rules of ice hockey, written in 1867, were patterned after those of lacrosse, and most hockey players in Canada also played lacrosse.
- Since 1934, the U. S. Lacrosse Association has conducted the U. S. Open tournament for post-collegiate club teams.
- Canada won the 2006 ILF Warrior World Lacrosse Championship with a 15-9 win over the U.S
