The school’s athletic program is known as the Great Danes and it is part of the American East Conference in the Division I since 2001.
The Great Danes basketball team is guided by Will Brown, who led them to their first-ever NCAA Division I Tournament berth in 2005-06 season after winning both the America East Conference tournament and regular-season titles.
The team participated in the Bracket Buster during the 2007-08 season. They won their second consecutive American East Conference Title in that season.
The team has produced many great players throughout its years, including: Levi Levine (UCC Demons), Jamar Wilson (Pepinster of Belgium), Lucious Jordan (Albany Patroons) and Kirsten Zöellner currently playing for the AONS Milonas Athens.
For the 2008-09 season the Great Danes only kept 2 of their previous year's team members. Coach Will Brown had to rebuild his squad with 8 new players. Albany held a 6-10 game record in Conference games, and a 15-16 overall mark for the season. It was not their best season, but on the other hand, they were rebuilding the foundations of a new team. Albany ended up 6th in the America East Conference standings during the2008-2009 season.
