UMBC sports teams are known as the Retrievers. They are part of the America East Conference in the NCCA Division I athletics.
The men’s basketball team plays its home games at the RAC Arena which has a capacity for 4,000 spectators. Randy Monroe is the current basketball Head Coach.
The school’s men’s basketball program has had a significant role in the development of the Athletics program. Up to this point, the Retrievers have not achieved a NIT or conference championship since it joined back in 2003.
UMBC won their first tournament championship with the America East Conference and the bid to their very first NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament in the season 2007-08.
In the 2008-2009 season, the Retrievers finished 7th in the America East Conference. The team held 7-9 record in conference games, and a 15-17 mark overall. As of January 2010, UMBC is last in their Conference standings with a 2-20 overall mark. This 2009-2010 is looking like one of the Retrievers' worst seasons ever.
