UMBC sports teams are known as the Retrievers which are part of the America conference in the NCCA Division athletics.

The men’s basketball team plays its home games at the RAC Arena which has a capacity for 4,000 spectators. Randy Moore is the current basketball Head Coach.

The school’s men’s basketball program has had a significant role in the development of the Athletics program. Up to this point, the Retrievers have not achieved a NIT or conference championship since it joined back in 2003.

UMBC won their first tournament championship with the America East Conference and the bid to their very first NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament in this season 2007-08
