The school men’s basketball team is known as the Running' Bulldogs and they play their home games at the Paul Porter Arena.

Gardner Webb University made it to the top of the college sports news media headlines back in the fall of 2002 when Dr. Christopher White, the 16 year college president, ordering that one of the team’s player’s grade-point-average be calculated without the F he received in a religion class for cheating.

This allowed player Carlos Webb to take part of the 2002-2001 season where he won National Christian College National Athletic Association title. He also won that year’s MVP in that tournament. Later that same year, Gardner Webb’s Athletic program was promoted to NCAA division I.

The Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs underwent some important changes during the 2008-2009 season. For starters, they had to leave behind the Atlantic Sun Conference and move on to the Big South Conference.

During that season, the Bulldogs went 9-9 in league play during its first run through the Big South Conference, forging a 13-17 overall record in one very demanding schedule.
