UNC Charlotte University athletics program is known as the 49ers. The men basketball team has been an important part of the school’s athletics department.
The team has posted four 20 plus-wins seasons and 7 appearances in NCAA tournaments. This includes the amazing 1977 season when they made it to the Final Four.
The team’s current Head Coach is Bobby Lutz who has been with the 49ers for over 12 years and he has signed an extension until the 2013-2014 season. He has the best record in the program's history.
Charlotte 49ers have won 10 first-team all-conference selections and 6 all-conference tournament choices.
During the 2008-2009 season, the team finished with a quite disappointing record. They went 5-11 in conference games, and 11-20 overall to finish 12th in the Atlantic 10 Conference. Things are looking much better in 2009-2010. As of early February 2010 the team is 8-1 in conference games and currently stands first in its conference.
