The Dayton Flyers' basketball team is the most emblematic team in Dayton University's Athletic Deparmtment. As many as 10.000 plus fans attend the Flyers' home games. The team's fans rank among the top 30 in NCAA hoops attendance.
Every year, during the regular season, the Flyers play against the Xaviers Musketeers for the Blackburn/McCafferty trophy. The rivalry started back in 1920, and receives quite a bit of media coverage every year.
The Flyers have won two regular season conference titles in 2000 and 2004 plus one post season conference tournament in 2003.
The Flyers have made it to the NCAA tournament 14 times. They were the 1967 runner-up, and during the 2009 season, the team made it to the second round.
Dayton was ranked again during the 2008-09 season en route to a 27-8 record that included a first-round win in the NCAA tournament. Head Coach Brian Gregory became the first UD coach since Don Donoher to have the Flyers ranked in back-to-back seasons. With an 11-5 record during the regular season, the Flyers finished 2nd in the Atlantic 10 Conference.
