La Salle might be the only university team named after a reporter's mistake. Back in the fall of 1931, a Baltimore sportswriter covering the La Salle/St. John’s (Md.) football game erroneously alluded to La Salle as being named for the French explorer La Salle, not St. John Baptist de La Salle.
Either way, the University embraced the new name and its been around since then.
Back in 1954 the Explorers won the NCAA Men’s Division I basketball tournament. The Explorers have had participation in 10 tournaments, but the team has not made it to March Madness since 1992.
Since moving into the Atlantic 10 conference, the explorers are yet to have the success they had in the MAAC. In 2009 however, the Explorer had the best record in Atlantic 10 road games. That was still not enough to put them on the top 3 spots of the conference. The Explorer went 9-7 in conference games and 18-13 overall for that season.
