The university’s men basketball team is known as the Rams. The team won the 1981 regular season championship as well as the post season 1999 conference tournament.
The team is well known for the export of outstanding basketball players among which we can mention: former URI Head Coach and NBA player Ernie Calverley, SA Spurs Tom Garrick, former NBA player for NY Knicks, Atlanta Hawks, and Boston Celtics Cuttino Mobley, and NBA player for LA Clippers Lamar Odom.
The Rhode Island Rams is among the oldest teams in the history of NCAA basketball; just recently during the 2005-2006 season the team marked their 100th year which was celebrated throughout the entire basketball campaign. |
