Xavier has one of the strongest basketball programs in the Atlantic 10 Conference. The Musketeers have 20 appearances in the NCAA Division I Tournament. They have made it to the Elite Eight Round twice in the last 6 seasons (2004-2008).
Xavier kicks in the 2009-10 season with important changes to its roster, including first-year head coach Chris Mack. He was a former XU team captain who spent the past five years as a Xavier assistant coach. He has some big shoes to fill now.
The Musketeers have advanced to the NCAA Tournament in each of the last four seasons and eight of the past nine years.
Xavier's holds a fierce rivalry with the Cincinnati Bearcats. The two teams compete annually in the Skyline Chili Crosstown Shootout. Xavier has won 30 Shootouts, while Cincinnati has won 47. The team also plays Dayton, Xavier's other big rival, for the Blackburn / McCafferty Trophy.
Chris Mack has been able to live up to his expectations in his first year as head coach. As of early February Xavier is tied for first place in the A10 with 8-2 mark in conference games and a 16-7 overall record. If they keep up the momentum, Xavier might just make it one more year to March Madness.
