Men's basketball has been traditionally the most popular sport at Maryland and the Terrapins have been very consistent over the years.
The team had its first Final Four appearance in 2001 and then moved on to win the 2002 NCAA National Championship game.
The team’s coach is Gary Williams, a Maryland graduate who managed to take them to eleven straight NCAA Tournaments (1993-2004) and led them to 20 wins per season for 8 consecutive years (1996-2004)
The school principal rivalries are between Duke Basketball, Penn State Football, Virginia Football, West Virginia Football and Johns Hopkins Lacrosse.
In the 2008-2009 season, the Terrapins went 7-9 in conference games and 20-13 overall to take 7th place in the Atlantic Coast Conference. As of late January 2010 the Terrapins are 14-5 overall and stand in the first place of the conference. It will be quite an improvement from last season's performance if they can keep up this rhythm.
