The Virginia Tech athletics program is part of the Atlantic Coast conference as of the 2004 season and participates in the NCCA Division I.

The men’s basketball team is refer to as the Hokies and it is coached by Seth Greenberg.

The basketball team has recently resurrected as the result of Greenberg’s work; as for more than a decade the team had not won any important tournaments.

During the 2004-2005 the team got their first berth in the NIT competition.

In the 2006-2007 season Virginia Tech beat Duke which is one of the best 

teams in the NCAA and one of the top ranked in North Carolina. Unfortunately, they did not make it to the finals due to their lost against Southern Illinois in the second round of NCAA tournament 2007.

The University of Virginia is the current most fervent rival of Virginia Tech Hoskies.
