The school was founded in 1851 and it is located in Minneapolis, Minnesota; it is also known as U of M or The U.

The U of M intercollegiate athletic teams are known as "Golden Gophers" which are members of the Big Ten Conference and the Western Collegiate Hockey Association in the NCAA.

The school’s men basketball team has been a very successful program with one NIT Championship, eight Big Ten Regular Season Championships and two National Championships besides three appearances in the Sweet 16.

The team is known as the Golden Gophers' and are coached by Tubby Smith who was recently hired by the school in early March 2007.

Today some former Gophers are actively playing in the NBA some of them are: Kevin Burleson, Joel Przybilla, and Kris Humphries.
