Since Head Coach John Thompson III arrived to the Hoyas Basketball program, the team has advanced to one Final Four (2007), won a BIG EAST Tournament title (2007), won back-to-back BIG EAST Regular Season titles (2006-07, 2007-08), reached three-straight NCAA Tournaments (2006-08) and been invited to the National Invitation Tournament twice (2005, 2009).
The Hoyas currently employ their own variant of the Princeton offense, a slow, cerebral style of play that is very rare in the modern college game. The style relies upon the "backdoor" pass, where a player on the wing suddenly moves in towards the basket, receives a bounce pass from a guard on the perimeter, and (if done correctly) finds himself with a clear shot at a layup.
Under coach John Thompson Hoyas Senior the men's basketball team won the NCAA championship in 1984.
The team has appeared in the Final Four 5 times and has won the Big East men’s tournament 7 times. They went 7-11 in conference games and 16-14 overall to finish 12 in the Big East in the 2008-2009 season.
As of mid February 2010 the Hoyas are 8-6 in conference games and 18-7 overall. They sit fourth in the Big East Conference. There might be a trip to the NCAA Tournament if they can only improve their on the road performance.
