Over the past 31 years, the school’s men basketball team has been a very successful program being ranked in the 19th position among all NCAA schools and with a total of 33 NCAA tournaments, 14 NIT appearances, eight Final Four appearances. In the 1980s the Cardinals were considered one of the best basketball teams in the NCAA championship

The team has reached the Sweet 16 on 15 occasions holding a 54-35 overall NCAA Tournament record.

The Battle for the Bluegrass or the Dream Game is the game played between the Cardinals and their main rival the University of Kentucky; other rivals are West Virginia, Cincinnati and Marquette.

18 Cardinal players have earned the All-America status and 57 players have been drafted in the NBA annual draft. The team’s arena Freedom Hall has been named as the Best Playing Floor in the nation besides hosting six NCAA Final Fours, four additional NCAA events and 10 conference tournaments

The team’s basketball games are the most televised ones either live or by delay feed making the Cards the most profitable college basketball program in the nation in both seasons 2004-2005 and in 2006-07.
