The school men’s basketball team has been quite successful in the past years. The Notre Dame Basketball team has been 29 times to the NCAA tournament. It has made it to the Final Four once in 1978 and 5 times into the Elite Eight.

They have not made it past the first round since 2008 when they made it into the second round.

The Fighting Irish basketball team is currently coached by Mike Brey who has been in charged since 2000. He has guided the team to postseason play 5 times since. He's best record yet is making it to the 2003 sweet sixteen.

The Fighting Irish had a good season in 2008-2009. They went 8-10 in conference games and finished 19-13 overall. The team was short of earning a third consecutive berth into March Madness. The Fighting Irish did advance in the NIT where they advanced to the semifinals.

It doesn't look as if Notre Dame is going to be able to make it into the NCAA tournament this 2010 season either. As of mid February the team is 7-6 in conference games and 16-9 overall.
