The school’s men basketball team is known as the Friars and it has won the NIT championship in two occasions in 1961 and 1963. They have had 15 NCAA tournament berths and 16 appearances in the NIT tourneys.

The Friars have had two Final Four appearances one in 1973 and 1987.

Among some of the school’s most successful coaches are: Joe Mullaney, Dave Gavitt and Rick Pitino.

Other very prominent basketball players are: NBA player Otis Thorpe, current NBA player on the Minnesota Timberwolves Ryan Gomes, and current NBA player and hero of the 1997 Elite Eight run Austin Croshere, '97.
