The school’s men basketball team is known as the Friars and it has won the NIT championship in two occasions: 1961 and 1963.
They have had 15 NCAA tournament berths and 16 appearances in the NIT tournaments.
The Friars have had two Final Four appearances one in 1973 and 1987.
Among some of the school’s most successful coaches are: Joe Mullaney, Dave Gavitt and Rick Pitino.
The Friars went 10-8 in conference play and 19-13 overall in the 2008-2009 season.
As of early march 2010 the Friars haved had one season to forget. They are 4-12 in conference games and 12-16 overall. They have lost 8 consecutive games and still need to face Pittsburgh and Seton Hall.
