The team won their first national championship in 1918 and then again in 1926 and the Orange appeared in the NIT Tournaments of 1946, 1950, 1964, 1967, 1971, 1972, 1981, 1982, 1997 and 2002.

Freshmen Carmelo Anthony, Gerry McNamara and Hakim Warrick were key players in guiding the team to their first victory in the NCAA Tournament Championship; Anthony was selected NCAA Basketball Tournament Most Outstanding Player.
