The Mountaineers men’s basketball team has been a very strong program during its history.

During the 2001 thru 2005 seasons the team achieved its best performance. The team had college basketball stars such as: Mike Gansey, Frank Young, J.D. Collins, Johannes Herber, Kevin Pittsnogle and Patrick Beilein who were important keys for their success in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament.

West Virginia has been to 20 NCAA Tournament and 15 NIT appearances in which they have won on 2 occasions one in 1942 and the other recently in 2007

Other former Mountaineers have been part of the NBA and 13 have been awarded as All-Americans.
