The George Mason Patriots Basketball team is one of the most successful programs in the school. In four different occasions (1989,1999,2001 and 2006) the men’s basketball Patriots have classified in the NCCA Tournament as well as three times (1986,2002 and 2004) for the NIT tournament.
More recently in 2006 the basketball team made it to the Final Four; one of the best achievements in their history.
The team’s main rivalries are: Old Dominion, James Madison, Hofstra, Virginia Commonwealth and UNC Wilmington.
One of their best-known players is George Evans who was a CAA “Player of the Year” three straight consecutive times (1997-2001).
The team’s best season was in 2006 as they won a school-record of 23 games and were ranked in the USA Today/ ESPN top 25 for the very first time.
For 2007-08 season, George Mason has another great season ending with an overall record of 23-11 and a winning conference record of 12-6. This 2008-09, Coach Jim Larranaga is recruiting quality players that can maintain the great history of the Patriots in the CAA and the NCAA Tournament.
