The school’s men basketball team had their very first season in 1968. The Rams had won 3 CAA Tournament titles and 3 CAA regular season titles.

The team was first invited to a NCAA Tournament in 1985 as a #2 seed the highest seed ever achieved by the team. Furthermore as winners of CAA, VCU has participated in 4 NCAA Tournaments; one of them as guests.

For the season 2006-2007, in hands of Grant VCU got the regular season conference title where they beat George Mason in the CAA championship and automatically classified to the NCAA Tournament. Grant was named the CAA Coach of the Year for his first achievement of breaking the school records for win in a season (28-7).

Although in 2006 the VCU Rams did not make it to a postseason participation. In 2006 coach Jeff Capel left VCU and was replaced by Anthony Grant.

In hands of Grant VCU got the regular season conference title where they beat George Mason in the CAA championship and automatically classified to the NCAA Tournament.

Grant was named the CAA Coach of the Year for his first achievement of breaking the school records for win in a season (27-6).

Last season 2007-08, the Rams ended also with a great conference record of 15-3, and finishing  in first place of the conference. However at the CAA Tournament 2008, the Rams lost in the semifinals against William & Mary 54-56. This season 2008-09, VCU is expecting a place in the conference tournament and a possible inclusion in the NCAA Tournament.
