The school men’s basketball team is known as the Cougars and the team is currently led by Benjy Taylor, James Farr, Matthew Muhammad, and Scott Soprych.
In 1984, the CSU men's basketball team gained 3rd place at the NAIA National Championships.
A few years later in 2006 the university withdrew from the Mid-Continent Conference becoming independent. Later on the school and the athletics program became member of the NCAA Division 1.
The Cougars currently play their home games at the Emil and Patricia A. Jones Convocation Center. During the season 2007-08, the Cougars had an overall record of 8-21. This 2008-2009 season, Coach Benjy Taylor is aiming to improve their record and perform well this period with his new recruiting class.
