Savannah State University is considered the oldest public historically black university in the county.

The men's basketball team is known as the Tigers and the home games are played in Tiger Arena.

The current basketball head coach is Horace Broadnax and he has been with the school since 2005.The school’s most traditional rivalry is with Fort Valley State University in all sports.

The Tigers achieved conference championships in 1970, 1979, 1980, and 1981 before moving to the Division I.

During the 1980-81 season the team won the SIAC Division III Championship and the NCAA South Regional Championship.

John Mathis is among the Tigers most accomplished players as he played as forward for the New Jersey Americans in the former American Basketball Association.
