The school men’s basketball team is known as the Golden Griffins. The team is led by coach Tom Parrota and assistants Rob Norris, Lazare Adingono, Tim Paul and Ben Julius.
The Griffins obtained their first and only regular conference championship with the MAAC in 1994 followed by a post season tournament in 1996.
Canisius University has been repeatedly ranked by the U.S. News and World Report among the list of "America's 367 Most Interesting Schools."
The team has been invited four times in the NCAA Tournament, the most recent one in 1996, and reached the Elite 8 in 1956.
The Golden Griffins have a traditional rivalry with Niagara University; both compete in the MAAC conference of the NCAA Division I.
