The school men’s basketball team is known as the Gaels. The team has been one of the most successful ones within the MAAC conference
They have achieved a total of six regular conference championship titles in 1983, 1985, 1996, 1997, 1998, and 2001 as well as several post season conference tournaments in 1982, 1984, 1985, 1998, 2000, 2001 and 2006.
The Iona Gaels main rivals are: Manhattan, Fordham, Miami and Fairfield. The team plays their home games at Hynes Athletic Center.
Some of the team’s most accomplished players are: Richie Guerin who played professionally in the NBA for 13 years and a six-time NBA All-Star. Jeff Ruland, a 1980 basketball star; he also played in the NBA and coached the Gaels once his active career finished. Steve Burtt an all-time leading scorer in Iona College history with 2,534 points, Burtt played for the NBA Golden State Warriors. |
