The team is known as the Pirates and they are currently coached by Kevin Nickelberry and his assistants Edward Joyner, Adrian Walters, Eric Williams, and operations director Steve Zengel.
The Pirates managed to win the MEAC regular conference season in 2001 after defeating Iowa State 58-57 and in 2002 as well as the MEAC post season tournaments in 2001, 2002, and 2006.
The Pirates play their home games at the Hampton Convocation Center.
The team ended the regular season
07-08 with an overall record of 18-11, and a 11-5 conference record which placed it in the 2nd place of the MEAC standings.
Even after losing key players every season, Coach Nickelberry has a talented eye for recruiting and has managed to complete a very good team this 2008-09 period.
