The school men’s basketball team is known as the Spartans and they are coached by Anthony Evans and assistants Lonnie Blow and Robert Jones.

Throughout its history the team has not achieved a regular conference title but their basketball program is very strong.

Some notable Norfolk State Spartans basketball players are: Al Beard, Bob Dandridge, Ray Epps and David Pope.

Currently, the team plays its home games at the Joseph G. Echols Memorial.

For the 2007-08 regular season the team achieved the 3rd place in the MEAC, with an 15-15 overall record and a 9-7 conference record.
