The school men basketball team is known as the Redbirds and they are members of the MVC since 1982.

Illinois State have won the MVC regular season title and the post-season tournament four years each.

The team is coached by Tim Jankovich and assistants Anthony Beane, Rod Judson, Paris Parham, Kerry Darting and administrative assistant Igor Vrzina.

Coach Jankovich is the 18th coach in the team’s history and he has managed to take the team to five consecutive NCAA tournament appearances besides two appearances in the Elite Eight.

In the 2007-08 the Redbirds finished at the second place in the overall MVC standings with a conference record of 13-5 and an overall record of 24-9.
