The Colonials entered their first season in the NCAA Division I on 1976-77 season and his first coach was Tron Welrich for three seasons.

The team has played with the NEC since 1981, winning the regular season championship and the post-season tournament five times each.

In the season 2006-2007 the Colonials finished the season in 4th place with an overall record of 17-11.

This season 2007-2008 Robert Morris won the regular season championshop and also got to the semifinals of the Conference Tournament but lost against Mount Saint Mary’s 65-83.
